Lippert SureStep Pontoon Ladder Review

Research-based review of Lippert SureStep 2025041871: five steps, mounting clearance, 400-lb rating, installation costs and listing discrepancies.

By BoatOwner HubPublished October 14, 2026Updated October 14, 2026

The Lippert SureStep offers an angled boarding route for a pontoon with enough stern clearance. Its attraction is the combination of broad steps, handrails and a deep reach. The important purchase question is whether the fixed mounting arrangement works on your actual deck.

Lippert SureStep Pontoon Boat Ladder 2025041871

Best suited to: Pontoon owners planning a permanent boarding upgrade who can verify deck clearance and structural support before ordering.

Main limitation: The fixed footprint needs careful measurement, and installation hardware is excluded. Amazon mounting dimensions differ from the current manufacturer requirements.

Quick verdict

Put this ladder on your shortlist if reboarding comfort is a priority and an installer can confirm the mounting arrangement. Choose by fit and the needs of your passengers rather than the promotional photographs alone. Obtain the current installation instructions before drilling.

The exact ladder covered here

This review covers ASIN B0G2PGGBGJ, Lippert part 2025041871, the standard SureStep. It is separate from the newer Free-Fit range. The clean Amazon listing identifies the part, and all four supplied photographs were matched to its gallery identifiers and visually inspected.

The photographs show the deployed ladder, a person pulling its retraction strap, boarding from the water and the folded ladder on a stern. They are seller illustrations, not photographs from our own test. A boat pictured in an advertisement does not establish compatibility with another boat.

Measure the whole installation space

Lippert specifies a minimum 16.19-inch straight mounting edge, 15.75 inches of clear deck depth and 22.8 inches of overall handrail clearance. The Amazon description instead gives a 15 by 13.5-inch footprint. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable; use the current manufacturer requirements and confirm the exact installation drawing.

Mark the proposed location without drilling. Check adjacent seating, gates, corner trim, engine movement and the route people will take onto the deck. Also check access beneath the mounting area. Enough visible deck space does not prove that the supporting structure can accept the installation.

What the boarding layout changes

The manufacturer describes five angled steps with 15.875-inch-wide treads and a 42-inch below-deck reach. These are useful dimensions for comparing a boarding route with a narrow vertical ladder. Consider where the lowest usable step will sit relative to your loaded boat and its waterline.

Do not assume that a deeper ladder automatically solves every mobility problem. A passenger still needs to reach the handrails, place a foot securely and move from the ladder onto the deck. Where possible, assess a comparable installation before committing. Advertising about children or pets is not a guarantee of suitability for every person or animal.

Construction and stowing

Lippert lists stainless-steel rails, powder-coated aluminum steps, self-draining construction and strap-operated retraction. Installation hardware and tools are not included. Plan the complete fitted cost rather than treating the ladder price as the entire project.

The strap may make the stowing routine easier to reach, but we have not measured operating force or tested it on a moving boat. Make sure the owner and regular crew understand the supplied operating instructions. Check the ladder and its attachment points as part of routine equipment inspections, and resolve looseness or damage before use.

Treat the rating as a limit

The stated capacity is 400 lb. Lippert describes the design as intended to meet ABYC standards; this review does not establish independent certification. Slip-resistant treads still require careful use and maintenance.

A product rating is not permission to ignore mounting condition, movement or the instructions supplied with the ladder. Do not improvise a mounting method from an online photograph. Have an appropriately qualified installer resolve uncertainty about the deck and attachment hardware. Keep the boarding area clear and follow the boat and ladder operating instructions.

Specifications we have not combined

Amazon lists an item weight of 39.7 lb, while Lippert lists a 34-lb shipping weight. Because these are conflicting figures with different labels, no definitive ladder weight is used here. Ask the seller for a confirmed figure if handling or installation weight affects your decision.

We have not tested wet grip, corrosion resistance, deployment effort or long-term durability. The manufacturer manual link could not be retrieved during research. Obtain that manual before installation; this review is buying guidance rather than an installation procedure.
