Attwood 11826-1 Telescoping Paddle Review

Research-based review of the Attwood 11826-1 telescoping paddle, its 54-inch reach, conflicting collapsed lengths and practical small-boat backup checks.

By BoatOwner HubPublished October 14, 2026Updated October 14, 2026

The Attwood 11826-1 is worth considering when a full-length spare paddle is awkward to store. Its appeal is a compact package that extends to 54 inches. The important purchase checks are whether you can reach the water comfortably from your boat and whether your storage space accommodates the conflicting collapsed-length figures.

Attwood 11826-1 Emergency Telescoping Paddle

Best suited to: Small-craft owners looking for a compact backup paddle that can be kept accessible onboard.

Main limitation: A short emergency paddle cannot guarantee progress against wind or current. Published collapsed lengths differ, so a tight storage compartment needs checking.

Quick verdict

Consider the 11826-1 if its reach works from your normal seated position and you can store it where it is immediately accessible. Give storage more clearance than a nominal 24-inch specification suggests. Choose a different paddle if your intended use demands a longer reach or sustained paddling performance that this review has not tested.

Check the longer Attwood variant

This review covers ASIN B07ZJ22XM3 and model 11826-1, selected as the 24-to-54-inch orange paddle on Amazon. Attwood’s catalog identifies this model as its 4.5-foot telescoping paddle. The 20-to-42-inch version belongs to a different model, 11828-1.

Match the model number when ordering or comparing offers. A product-family title can cover both lengths, and a shorter alternative may look similar in a small photograph.

Allow for the 24-versus-25-inch discrepancy

Amazon’s selected option and supplied dimension graphic state 24 inches collapsed. Its description and A+ material instead say 25 inches, as does Sportsman’s Warehouse for model 11826-1. The consistent maximum is 54 inches. Treat the storage length as approximately 24–25 inches until you measure the delivered paddle.

Measure the compartment opening as well as its inside length. A paddle that fits diagonally inside a locker may still be awkward to remove when other equipment is packed around it. Leave room for the blade and grip, and rehearse retrieval before departure.

Check usable reach from your boat

Overall length is only a starting point. Seat height, the distance to the side of the hull and the height of the gunwale affect how much paddle reaches the water. A small kayak and a high-sided pontoon can present very different reach requirements.

Try the intended paddling position in a controlled setting before relying on this as a backup. Avoid planning around leaning far over the side. This review establishes no maximum boat size, passenger load or wind/current capability for the paddle.

Understand the materials and the tradeoff

Attwood’s catalog specifies a high-impact plastic blade and corrosion-resistant aluminum pole. The supplied images show an orange blade, T-grip and telescoping shaft. The listing markets the paddle as floating and suitable for fresh or salt water. Those are product claims, not results of our own testing.

A telescoping design introduces joints that deserve inspection. Follow the supplied extension and locking instructions, check that the sections stay secure, and inspect the blade and grip for damage. Corrosion resistance should not be interpreted as freedom from cleaning, drying or inspection.

Give backup equipment a realistic job

An emergency spare can only help if it is accessible and usable by the people aboard. Decide where it will live, who can reach it and what other equipment might obstruct it. A paddle buried under bags is inconvenient precisely when quick access matters.

Flotation of the paddle does not make it a personal flotation device or rescue support. Do not treat it as a substitute for the safety equipment and trip planning appropriate to your craft and waterway. We have not tested speed, thrust, stiffness, fatigue life or recovery after dropping it.

Inspect before packing it away

Check the delivered model number, extend and secure the paddle according to its instructions, and measure the collapsed unit if locker fit matters. Keep the instructions with your boat records and deal with an insecure joint before a trip.

The listing artwork gives a weight of 1 lb 5 oz. We have not independently weighed the product, so exact carrying weight is not part of our recommendation. The useful buying question is whether the complete paddle fits your storage and can be handled comfortably.

Before-you-buy checklist

Confirm model 11826-1; allow for the collapsed-length discrepancy; check seated reach; choose an accessible storage position; and assess whether a telescoping backup suits your intended trip. For related equipment, browse Safety & Docking reviews.

If the boat’s freeboard makes a 54-inch paddle impractical, do not let compact storage outweigh that limitation. Reach and safe handling take priority over fitting the smallest locker.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the 42-inch Attwood paddle?

No. This review covers model 11826-1, extending to 54 inches. The shorter 11828-1 is a separate model.

Will it fit a compartment exactly 24 inches long?

Do not assume it will. Published collapsed lengths vary between 24 and 25 inches, so allow clearance and measure the delivered product.

Can it replace a normal kayak paddle?

This review treats it as a compact backup. Sustained paddling efficiency and comfort have not been tested, and fit depends on the craft and user.
